These were among my first public interest cases. A number of individuals were charged across different states for posting offensive statements on the Perak State Government portal. Following the departure of Dato’ Azmi Ariffin, Tuan Radhi Abas was acting Head of Commercial Crimes Unit; he assigned me to attend the charging of Azrin Mohd Zain and Muslim bin Ahmad before (as she then was) Puan Hakim Rozana Ali Yusof. I was made to understand these were the first cases (and conviction) for that type of offensive statement criminalised under the relevant law of the Communications & Multimedia Act 1998.
