I didn’t know it was a crime - 23.5.2015

I remember this case fondly because it was my first terrorism case and one of our earliest criminal cases at my former firm, the Chambers of Arik & Kamal with co-founder Encik Ahmad Kamal bin Abu Bakar. Incidentally the special law, SOSMA and alleged terrorist cells in Malaysia were hot topics at that time. Rosmadi was not the first case to be prosecuted under the SOSMA procedure, but I believe it was the first whose sentence of 2 years imprisonment was confirmed (i.e. settled with no more appeal pending — because the other cases were still pending appeal). The prosecution filed an appeal against Rosmadi for increased sentence. We filed a cross-appeal (going for outright acquittal despite Rosmadi having pleaded guilty) and sent a letter of representation to Putrajaya for good measure. Our petition of appeal said we meant business. The appeal was later withdrawn, but we would never know what was the actual reason for the withdrawal.
